Disappointment on final Stanford Open Space / Field Research zoning

At their June 10, 2003 meeting, the Santa Clara County  Supervisors handed down a huge disappointment -- they failed to hold Stanford  to adequate, environmentally-protective zoning standards for the foothills.  The creation of this zoning was part of the December  2000 agreement giving Stanford 5 million square feet of development  rights.

The Supervisors voted unanimously to approve the  zoning for the Stanford foothills without adding the protections the public  deserves. The Board failed to include political accountability for land  use decisions, inadequately protected the views of the foothills, and  failed to protect sensitive wildlife habitat in the Open Space / Field  Research (OS/F) District.

Thanks to the many of you who wrote or spoke to the  Planning Commission and Board of Supervisors, CGF and the community did  win some improvements over the original proposal (which was even worse).  Still, the final  language did not go far enough.

The County has promised to revisit some of these  issues in the future, and the Committee for Green Foothills will need  your help in holding them to that promise.
